If you are looking for practical tips and concrete solutions to improve your work relationships, you are in the right place.

Read on and discover how to transform conflicts into opportunities for growth and teamwork.

When people come together, conflicts may unfortunately arise.

You as a human being tend to be competitive and it is natural for you to have ideas and suggestions that can sometimes contradict each other.

To avoid internal conflicts among your team members, it is essential that you know the tools, tips and techniques to identify, solve and prevent interpersonal problems.

Identifying Interpersonal Conflicts

Conflict between people is not always obvious, sometimes it can be subtle.

It is not simply two people yelling at each other, although that can happen if the conflict is not properly resolved.

However, there are ways to recognize a conflict before it escalates further.

It can be helpful to look for signs in behavior or body language that indicate the presence of ongoing conflict.

Some signs might be avoiding eye contact, adopting a defensive posture, or displaying angry gestures.

How to identify conflicts in your relationships?

 - Watch for aggressive body language.
 - Notice if conversations are tense or even sparse.
 - Pay attention to possible gossip.
 - Notice if frequent arguments occur.
 - Notice negative facial expressions.
 - Notice if there is a lack of sincerity, openness or honesty.

If left unresolved, conflicts can affect trust between the people involved, decrease motivation and even lead to loss of respect. These problems can arise for different reasons such as differences in work ethics, opinions on a specific topic or even something as simple as making coffee.

To address these conflicts, there are two common approaches: resolve them directly or through peer mediation. These strategies help reduce tensions and find creative solutions to problems.

Tips for direct conflict resolution

Direct conflict resolution is an excellent way to address interpersonal problems. To achieve this, there are several strategies that can help you achieve harmony and synergy in your relationships.

It is essential to keep in mind that each conflict is unique, therefore, you should adapt these techniques to your particular situation to obtain the best results.

Learn to listen

Many times, problems arise due to a lack of communication between the parties involved. An effective way to prevent this is to teach those close to you how to practice active listening. This technique consists of gathering information during a conversation and using it as a basis for resolving the conflict. Developing this basic skill will contribute significantly to solving problems with positive results.

In addition, active listening allows people to feel understood and respected, which greatly enhances conflict resolution.

Pay attention when listening

To avoid unnecessary conflict, it is important to pay full attention to what the other person has to say to you. This involves not only using your ears, but also your heart. Keep an open mind and be receptive to the other person's message.

Also, try to remain calm and avoid interrupting the speaker whenever possible. This will help reduce tension levels and allow for calm expression by all involved in the conflict.

Clear communication

It is essential that all parties involved in the conflict communicate clearly and directly. This implies expressing exactly what you want to convey, leaving no room for misunderstandings. In this way, everyone will have a clear understanding of the situation and will be able to reach an agreement without complications.

In addition, it is important to keep in mind that each individual should express himself or herself with respect for the others to avoid fueling feelings of resentment and further aggravating the conflict.

Some additional techniques

Don't jump to conclusions

Avoid jumping to conclusions or making assumptions about the people involved in a conflict. Don't think you know what they think or feel, as this puts you at a disadvantage. Instead, allow them to express themselves as they see fit and move forward from there.

Prioritize the well-being of both parties

Instead of thinking in terms of winner and loser, focus on seeking mutual welfare. Compromises and agreements should be based on benefits for both parties. This way, each party will be satisfied with the outcome and there will be less distrust between them.

Make informed decisions

Avoid making rash or unreflected decisions. Before reaching an agreement, gather all relevant information, explore all options and evaluate the pros and cons. This will ensure that the final decision is best for both of you.

Focus on the facts

When dealing with interpersonal conflicts, it is important to focus on the facts. Personal opinions are subjective and unreliable as a basis for finding an appropriate solution. If you find yourself getting angry, it is important to walk away until you can have a civil conversation. These tips may seem obvious but it is surprisingly easy to forget when we are angry.

Sometimes resolving a conflict on your own doesn't produce the desired results. In these cases, peer mediation is an excellent option. It involves two or more people working together to find a mutually satisfactory solution. It is important that all involved are committed to the agreements reached and are realistic about expectations.

Resolving conflict through peer mediation

Peer mediation is an active process for resolving conflicts, which seeks to find a solution that satisfies everyone involved.

It is achieved through the participation of a trained mediator, who acts as a guide to lead those involved towards a peaceful solution.

The mediator has the responsibility to support and encourage the parties to reach a solution that works for everyone.

This mediation technique is very effective in addressing problems, as mediators can better understand each party's point of view by being part of the group in conflict.

Peer mediator training is crucial in the peer mediation process. Mediators must learn how to remain impartial, detect bias, deal with confidence, and guide toward an amicable solution.

In addition, the mediator must be familiar with tools such as the "Conflict Resolution Diagram" to help the parties identify their needs, interests and goals.

Proper use of these tools helps the mediator find a satisfactory solution for all involved.

If the mediator gets too close to the conflict, it is important to withdraw and allow another professional to conclude the resolution.

What you will find in the worksheet

In this worksheet, you will find questions to help you reflect on various relational situations:

 - Describe the situation and explore how you feel about it.

 - What is your relationship with the people involved?

 - Analyze how this conflict affects your emotions and how you think it impacts the company.

 - Reflect on how important these relationships are to you.

Peer mediation is an excellent tool for addressing disagreements between two people. It can be especially useful in minor conflicts that do not affect team productivity. However, it is important to adapt this technique to your company's principles and the preferences of both parties involved.

To do this, the mediator should ask a series of relevant questions to obtain sufficient information and begin to address the conflict effectively.

It is important to note that the above strategies can be applied both in and outside of the workplace. These techniques are universal and can be useful even in everyday situations or disagreements with strangers, such as when we go to the supermarket.

Therefore, developing conflict resolution skills is fundamental as they allow us to improve interpersonal communication and avoid unnecessary confrontations. In addition, these skills also contribute to making decisions that are more satisfactory for all parties involved.

I interviewed a professional to give us his point of view.

To find effective solutions different from the ones I have already discussed in this article, I interviewed labor relations expert Juan Giménez, who shared eight key ways to resolve these conflicts.

Open and honest communication: "Communication is fundamental to resolve any conflict. It is important for the parties involved to sit down and talk openly and honestly, expressing their concerns and points of view without personally attacking the other party.

Active listening: "To resolve a conflict, it is necessary to actively listen to the other person. This involves paying attention to what they say without interrupting, showing empathy and trying to understand their perspective".

 3. Look for common ground: "It is helpful to look for areas where both parties agree. Identifying common interests can help build a solid foundation for mutual agreement.

 4. Mediate with neutrality: "In some cases, it may be helpful to have a neutral mediator to facilitate communication between the conflicting parties. This person should be impartial and help to find equitable solutions".

Focus on solutions: "It is important to let go of the past and focus on finding practical solutions to resolve the conflict. Working together toward a common goal can help overcome tensions.

Accept and learn from differences: "In a diverse work environment, differences of opinion are normal. Learning to accept and respect these differences can contribute to a harmonious coexistence".

 7. Avoid direct confrontation: "When there is conflict, it is best to avoid direct confrontation and find an appropriate time to address the problem. This prevents the situation from becoming even more tense".

 8. Ask for help when necessary: "If the above attempts fail to resolve the conflict, it is important to ask for help from human resources or a supervisor. They can provide additional guidance and support in finding a solution."

Effective conflict resolution in the workplace requires patience, understanding and a willingness to find mutually beneficial solutions. Following these eight key ways proposed by Juan Gimenez can help restore peace and improve working relationships within the team.

Remember that each conflict is unique, so adapting these strategies according to the specific context will be critical to achieving positive results.
